October 2024 Book Clubs

The two groups that have been meeting as the “book club” have decided to read different books. So perhaps we’ll call them monthly book discussions. Drop in on one or both whenever they look interesting. But I will tell you this: even if something doesn’t seem that interesting to you, I bet the discussion will be!

In October, we have two:

  • Thursday evening, October 24 at 6:30pm at the Oak Table, we will be meeting to discuss “Mere Christianity” by C. S. Lewis. During WWII, the BBC asked C.S. Lewis to give a series of radio talks describing the basics of Christianity. “Mere Christianity” is a transcript of those talks, edited to read appropriately as a book. It’s a great book and I hope you will join our book discussion.
  • Friday morning, October 25 at 10am in the Library. The group decided to read something to help them understand LGBTQ+ issues. Specifically, we will be reading something about the intersection of the homosexual orientation and the Christian faith. The book chosen for this discussion is "God and the Gay Christian: The Biblical Case in Support of Same-Sex Relationships" by Matthew Vines – A pro-gay book that argues same-sex relationships can align with Christian faith. Vines explores scripture and challenges traditional views with a deep love for the Bible.

I think both of these book discussions are fantastic. The scriptures tell us “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” (Proverbs 27:27) I have been encouraged and challenged by people’s thoughts and reflections as we have discussed previous books. I am thrilled for the opportunity to read and discuss all the books above!

Remember, you don’t have to choose one or the other. If you want to come to both book discussions, we’d love to see you there!
